Some have called it the biggest train wreck on television — MTV’s “Sweet 16″ show where teens celebrate their birthdays with excess. Two girls from Springfield, Nebraska, decided to do the opposite for their 16th birthday by celebrating their generosity for others.
Inside the Sarpy County fairgrounds, two girls named Taylor are having a birthday party. The best friends also share the same middle name, Marie.
“I expected it to be a lot of fun,” said Taylor Marie Smith.
“I think it was better than I expected,” said Taylor Marie Schorsch.
Their birthdays are a month apart. They figured why not share the stage on their special day.
“I was pretty impressed with the turnout,” said Smith.
The sweet 16 party had the look — a country band, two personalized cakes and presents. It didn’t take long for the pile with a purpose to grow.
“All the proceeds from the raffle and all the gifts are going to Children’s Hospital because it’s a thoughtful way to give back,” said Smith from the stage. “You don’t hear very often about 16-year olds donating to Children’s Hospital.”
You don’t. The invitations explained to the guests all presents will be given away in the name of sick children.
“Once I was hospitalized last year,” said Smith, “I realized the need for more games for pre-teens rather than little kids.”
And their teenage friends didn’t disappoint. They received 85 gifts.
“Some friends thought it was weird because they’d never seen anyone do it before,” said Schorsch.
In a world where we are celebrated for our excess, toning it down never felt so good.
“I hope I get to see the kids get the presents,” said Taylor Smith. “It’s like Christmas all over again.”
If this is sweet 16 what happens when the Taylor and Taylor turn 21?
“I don’t think you can top this one.”
The gifts will be delivered to Children’s Hospital and Medical Center this week. The girls’ raffle also raised more than $200.
